LOCAL BRIEFS: Gorze posts one of fastest prep 10k times By Mail Tribune staff Jun 12, 2022 02:34 PM A A Fresh off winning a runaway title in the 3,000-meter run at the Class 5A state track and field meet last month, Crater’s Tyrone Gorze added to his lengthy lists of accomplishments Friday night. Gorze, the Comets’ rising star senior, ran one of the fastest 10,000-meter races in the nation for a prep runner at the Portland Track Festival at Lewis & Clark College. Gorze’s prep time of 29 minutes, 29.2 seconds puts hims sixth all-time in the nation for high school boys. He ranks behind former University of Oregon standouts Rudy Chapa, Bill McChesney and Galen Rupp, according to Track & Field News’ list. Chapa set the top time of 28:32.7 in 1976. McChesney, who is third overall, also ran his time of 29:06.8 in 1976, while Rupp posted his mark of 29:09.56 in 2004. Gorze also captured the individual title at the 5A state cross-country meet in November, leading the Comets to winning the team championship in Eugene. Along with his state title in the 3k at Hayward Field, Gorze finished second behind teammate Josiah Tostenson in the 1,500. Douglas, Miller to play in All-Star Series South Medford seniors Tanner Douglas and Jace Miller have been selected to compete in The Richardson Oregon All-Star Series, a baseball showcase of the top seniors from Class 6A and 5A this past season, it was announced recently. Douglas and Miller, who were both first team all-Southwest Conference selections this past season, will be compete on the South squad when the two-game series takes place June 18-19 at Oregon State’s Goss Stadium. Douglas went 8-1 with a 3.81 ERA, while also batting .449 with 28 runs and 26 RBIs despite drawing 26 walks — 18 in league play alone. Miller, an infielder, finished with a .356 batting average with 19 runs and 14 RBIs this spring. Coaching the North squad are Joe Monahan of 6A state champion West Linn and Canby’s JJ Stolsig. The South is led by skippers Scot McDonald of 5A state champion Crescent Valley and Jeff Stolsig of Mid-Willamette Conference champion Lebanon. The first game of the series is slated for 3 p.m. June 18. The series concludes Sunday, June 19, with a single game with a start time of 11 am. Both games will be nine-inning contests.
