Pilots roar to opening win PORTLAND - The Ashland Pilots American Legion A baseball team used an 11-run fifth inning to pull away for a 19-0, seven-inning win over David Douglas in the first game at the state tournament. Ashland, the Area 4 champion, moves on to play McKay today at 4 p.m. in the eight-team double elimination tournament. Pilots pitcher Ryan Decker lost his no-hit bid in the fifth inning but finished with 10 strikeouts and the win. Ashland (28-3-1) used a 17-hit attack while holding David Douglas to just three hits. Bill Rowe went 3-for-5, including a two-run home run, while Titus Weston added four hits in five at-bats with three doubles. AAA LEGION STATE TOURNAMENT - At Corvallis, Roseburg Doc Stewarts upped its record to 47-5 with a 12-2, eight-inning rout of Century Bertsch Excavation, and the defending champion Klamath Falls Falcons also moved on with a win. Century finishes 0-2 in the double-elimination tournament, while Roseburg plays today against the loser of David Douglas-Corvallis game. Jed Capouch and Ole Sheldon each belted home runs for Doc Stewarts. The Falcons, an 8-7 winner over Southridge, used a pair of two-run innings then a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win. Klamath Falls plays today at 7:35 p.m. against Corvallis or David Douglas. Softball NATIONAL U12 TOURNAMENT - At Mount Vernon, Wash., the Rogue Valley Rebels put on their hitting shoes at nationals and came away with a pair of victories, while the North Medford Black Tornado continued to struggle. The Rebels romped past Olympia, Wash., 9-0 in five innings, then held on for a wild 9-7 victory over an all-star team from Angleton, Texas. The Black Tornado dropped a 9-0 contest to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. On Tuesday, North Medford fell 15-0 to the Pensaquitos Lightning of San Diego, Calif., then fell to the San Carlos Force, 16-1, in the final game of round-robin play on Wednesday. North plays today at 9 .m. against the Tucson Scramblers. Jill Jeter picked up both victories on the mound as the Rebels extended their season record to 38-7. The McLoughlin Middle School seventh-grader yielded just one hit through four innings against Olympia and held the hard-hitting Texas squad to seven hits in seven innings. The Rebels built an 8-2 lead over Angleton through five innings only to watch the Texas team erupt for five runs in the sixth. Randi Salyer went 3-for-3 and scored three times to lead the Rebels' attack against Angleton. In the win over Olympia, Brooke Newsom went 2-for-3, Simone Hubbard went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and Jill Jeter went 1-for-1 with four RBIs. The Rebels, who are made up of girls from the Crater, North Medford and South Medford school boundaries, play at 1 p.m. today against a Southern California opponent.
