Officers went to the hospital Tuesday night after receiving a report that a patient had been sexually abused earlier in the day by a man who went into her room and stayed for "several hours," Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said. The man, who told the patient he worked at the hospital, allegedly touched her inappropriately during the visit, Moran said. The 33-year-old patient later asked a Providence staff member about the man and described the incident, prompting hospital officials to phone police. Police said the man is described as being white and in his 50s. He is about 5 feet 5 inches tall and was wearing blue jeans, a long-sleeved blue T-shirt and a black baseball cap at the time of the alleged assault. He also wore two "hoop-style" earrings in one ear and may have tattoos on his forearms, Moran said. Police interviewed hospital staff members who might have observed the man, in an attempt to obtain a more detailed description of him. Katy Bazylewicz, the hospital’s marketing director, said patients are being instructed to make sure staff members attending to their needs are wearing name tags and photo identification, which is hospital policy. "Providence wants to assure the community and patients that they are safe in our hospital," Bazylewicz said.
