Naumes caps career with all-state honor St. Mary's Becky Naumes was voted first-team all-state in balloting by Class 2A volleyball coaches. The 5-foot-11 senior middle blocker was an integral part of Crusaders teams that went undefeated in league three years in a row. St. Mary's won two straight Big Fir League titles before moving across the mountains and taking the Southern Cascade League crown. She helped St. Mary's to a third-place finish in the 1997 state tournament. The Crusaders did not place this year. "She's the best middle (among Class 2A players) in the state," St. Mary's coach James Joy says. "She played all the way around, and she's been one of the two best passers on the team the past two years. Everybody sees the hitting, but her defense is what makes her valuable." Naumes is the first St. Mary's player to gain first-team status. Her sister, Sarah Naumes (1996), Shannon Neyt (1985) and Julie Collier (1984) were second-team all-state selections from St. Mary's. Naumes was second-team all-state tournament and third-team all-state a year ago. She wasn't an all-tournament pick this year. "That was a disappointment," concedes Joy. "But the team didn't play very well. The farther you go (in the tournament), the more you get looked at." Naumes was a four-year starter, and in the past three seasons, the Crusaders were 64-10 overall.
