Challengers within one win of tourney GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL CENTRAL POINT -- Gilchrist shocked Cascade Christian earlier this season in Southern Cascade League girls basketball, but it might have been a blessing in disguise for the eighth-ranked Challengers. For the second time in five days, Cascade Christian defeated Gilchrist by more than 35 points. The Challengers' 68-29 victory over the Grizzlies in a SCL playoff game Tuesday at Scenic Middle School advances Cascade to within one win from its second Class 2A state tournament appearance in the past three years. Cascade Christian (23-2) will play host to Bonanza, which defeated Chiloquin 59-43 in the other SCL playoff game Tuesday, at Scenic Middle School on Thursday, with a trip to Pendleton at stake. Cascade coach Loren King says the Challengers' earlier 46-44 loss to Gilchrist was a "wake-up call." "Sometimes something like that has to happen to you to get your attention," said King. Natalie Peck stood out for the Challengers against the Grizzlies with 18 points and 13 rebounds, both team highs. "She moved well and took the ball to the basket," said King. "Nothing fancy." Peck's work on the boards helped Cascade to a 38-12 rebounding advantage. "If you get a second shot or they only get one, it makes a huge difference," said King. Crystal Tait added 15 points for the Challengers, but more importantly did an excellent job in holding Gilchrist's Robyn Hendry to 11 points. "Crystal played tough defense in the open court on their point guard Robyn Hendry," said King. "They took Hendry down on the block because she's bigger than Crystal, but Crystal guarded her like she's been playing post all her life." KLAMATH UNION 71, HOOD RIVER VALLEY 37 -- At Klamath Falls, Klamath Union outscored Hood River Valley 40-22 in the first half as the Pelicans crushed the Mount Hood Conference's No. 4 team in the opening round of the Class 4A state playoffs. The Pelicans (16-7) travel to South Salem, the Valley League's No. 3 team, for Thursday's second round. Sam Gilbert scored eight of her 13 points in the first quarter and freshman Amy Denson scored seven of her team-high 14 points in the second quarter. Danielle Dobey grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Pels to a 49-29 rebounding advantage. Pam Frei scored 10 points to go with 11 rebounds and Kate Richards had eight points and eight rebounds. Allison Donnelly scored 16 points to pace the Eagles (12-12). Hood River played without junior point guard Darcy Davidson, who was suspended after being ejected in her team's previous game. ROGUE RIVER 52, LAKEVIEW 49 -- At Rogue River, Shae Wright poured in 18 points while Melissa Badley and Mindi Yost each added 10 to lift the Chieftains to a Skyline Conference win. Down 49-39 with two minutes to play, Lakeview mounted a comeback that closed the gap to 51-49 with 17 seconds left. The Honkers misfired on a jumper and Michelle Anderson added a free throw to ice the victory for Rogue River (15-4, 9-2 Skyline). The Chieftains will play at Henley (9-2 Skyline) Thursday at 7 p.m. for the Skyline Conference championship. Should Rogue River win, the Chieftains head straight to the state tournament and Henley gains the No. 2 slot. Mazama then travels to North Valley in the third-place game on Saturday. Should Henley win on Thursday, Rogue River drops to third in the league standings and North Valley gains the No. 2 slot. The Chieftains would then play host to Mazama Saturday at 7 p.m. in the third-place game. Ashley Enoch poured in 19 points to pace the Knights (14-6, 9-3 Skyline). Kelsey Reinhart added 10 points and five rebounds, while Julia Arnado chipped in five points, six assists and five steals.
