Myers has big day for North By Greg Stiles Another day in the discus ring, another memorable series. Scott Myers floats the discus through the April chill like most people hang Frisbees. Hes making a point to enjoy each fling of his final prep spring. The North Medford senior extended his state best by nearly 10 feet Thursday afternoon at Bowerman Field when he propelled three throws past the 170-foot mark topped by a 177-foot effort. "Right now there is no one else out there with me," said Myers, who also owns the states top shot put mark of 56-7. "I know I can do better when I have some competition. I dont know what Ill be able to do, but this gives me a stronger drive." Myers began the day with a 165-10 toss, followed by 168-3. Then he popped his big one on the final preliminary round. After a scratch, he wound up his series with 175-8 and 174-6 throws. The scratch was his best toss of the day and landed an estimated 185 feet away. "I think I was having too much fun, and all of a sudden I stepped out of the ring as I was looking at it," Myers said. "Im still learning. I think I can improve another 15 feet." Myers was one of four double winners for North as the Black Tornado tied Klamath Union, 72-72. North won the girls competition, 83-58. Dustin Brooks (19-5 long jump, 41-1 triple jump), Chris Vorgang (15.6 high hurdles, 42.6. intermediate hurdles) and Matt Parish (23.2 200 meters, 49.9 400) also doubled for the Tornado. Parish and Brooks joined Matt Schneider and Alan Borelli to win the 4 x 400-meter relay by two seconds (3:25.0) to pull even with the Pelicans. "It was a nerve-racking race, but Borelli and Schneider ran great legs," Parish said. "Schneider has been hurt, and it was basically the first time hes run with us." Thursday was also the first time North Medford freshman Brittany Hodges took on defending state 400-meter champion Sara Schaaf. Schaaf was clocked in 57.5 seconds and Hodges in 58.4. Schaaf, who had run only one 400 race previously this season while running the 1,500, took advantage of running in Lane 2, reeling in Hodges with about 150 meters to go. "Its nice to be on the inside where you can see," Schaaf said. "Usually I like to be by my competitor with 150 meters to go, and it worked out that way. "There hasnt been too much competition in the district. I was really excited to see what I could do." Hodges lamented an opportunity that escaped. "I didnt go with her when I had the chance," Hodges said. "I was hoping to run in the low 57s. Ive been running close to that in practice. "I wasnt focusing my whole season on this race, but when you go against a state champion, you try to be ready." Schaaf came back a few minutes later to win the 800 in 2:30.0. Emily Dunn won the long jump (15-11) and triple jump (33-7), while Crystal Worthington took the discus (95-1) and shot put (35-8) for the Tornado.
