The fire apparently started in a shed behind a duplex at 14 Elm St.,  off of West Main Street not far from the Black Bird Shopping Center.  It spread to the duplex and a neighboring vacant house as seven engines from Medford Fire-Rescue and Jacksonville Fire Department arrived to battle the flames. Darryl Cranmer, who rents the one side of the duplex with his wife, Tamsyn, said he had been playing with his son, Malaki, and had gone out to the shed when he heard someone yell about the fire, and he turned and saw flames surrounding the back door. He ran back into the house to warn the other occupants, including the other family in the duplex. Later, it was discovered that a friend of his was in the back area when the fire started and suffered possibly first-degree burns on his arms, back and face. He was transported to the hospital for treatment. Neither the Cranmers nor the Chapin family, who rent the other half of the duplex, knew what his friend was doing at the time or how the fire started. The Cranmers and the Chapins made it out of the house without injury, although the Chapins reported losing pets in the fire.  The fire started in the duplex at about 3:45 p.m., sending smoke billowing into the neighborhood. Firefighters situated their engines on Columbus Street between Main and Eighth Street, and police stationed patrol cars at the intersections of Columbus Avenue and Main, Bryant and Eighth streets to control traffic. Firefighters fought the flames for around two hours, but both houses were lost. Jackson County property records list the duplex as being 1,684 square feet and being built in 1957.  Battalion chief Wayne Painter said the cause of the fire is under investigation.   Updated, 5:30 p.m.: Renters at the duplex at 14/16 Elm Street said it was a friend of theirs who was transported to the hospital with possibly first-degree burns on his back, face and arms. He was in the garage when the fire started, Darryl Cranmer said. Updated, 5:05 p.m.: Medford police say one man was transported to a local hospital with burns from the fire that started at 16 Elm St. in west Medford. Two ambulances are on scene. 4:23 p.m.: A garage and a duplex burned this afternoon at 14/16 Elm St. in west Medford, according to emergency traffic and witnesses on scene. The fire started at about 3:45 p.m. in the garage, where it consumed two vehicles. Fire crews said over scanner traffic the blaze was about 75 percent knocked down, though some flames remained in the attic. Renters of the home, Darryl Cranmer and his wife, Tamsyn, made it out of the house without injury. Darryl said he didn't know how the fire started and that the house next-door, which was unoccupied, had burned, too.  At least seven fire engines from Medford Fire-Rescue and Jacksonville Fire Department were on scene to fight the fire. The block of Elm Street is shut down, with police cars stationed at the intersections of Columbus Avenue and West Main, Bryant and Eighth streets.
