Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend November 11, 2005 JPR pulls ‘Sustainable Kitchen’ By JONEL ALECCIA Mail Tribune ASHLAND — Jefferson Public Radio officials abruptly discontinued a radio show hosted by a former local chef amid charges he used unattributed material from other sources. "The Sustainable Kitchen," hosted for more than two years by chef Stu Stein, was pulled this week with apologies to listeners, said Eric Teel, director of FM network programming for JPR. "We discovered that several of the commentary pieces had contained passages or other chunks of content from other sources," Teel said. "They were written as if they were his own ideas and thoughts." Stein, 39, denied plagiarizing material. The former chef at Ashland’s Peerless Restaurant now works at the Avalon Hotel and Spa and Rivers Restaurant in Portland. He said concerns arose about the content of one show, but added that any similarity to other authors was accidental. "Nothing was done intentionally," he said. "I didn’t cut and paste." Advertisement Teel, however, said JPR staff members discovered several instances in which Stein’s material appeared to be lifted from other sources. He stopped short of characterizing the act as plagiarism, however, saying he "didn’t want to vilify the guy." But Jessica Robinson, the interim news director at JPR, insisted on discontinuing the broadcasts, Teel said. "In our opinion, these did not live up to our journalistic standards," he said. Stein is the co-author of the book "The Sustainable Kitchen," which focused on ways to use seasonal, locally produced food. He also briefly appeared as a columnist for the Ashland Daily Tidings newspaper, a sister publication of the Mail Tribune. Stein said he was not concerned that allegations of plagiarism would affect his previous work. "I’m not worried in the least," he said. He was surprised at the sudden ending of the radio show, but he said he was considering terminating it anyway because of logistical, technical and financial difficulties.
