Hidden Valley slips by Honkers MURPHY � Lakeview didn�t leave the Hidden Valley boys basketball team much room for error in Tuesday�s Skyline Conference playoff game. Fortunately for the Mustangs, they didn�t make too many mistakes as Hidden Valley gained a late lead and held on for a 57-54 victory. "It was nip-and-tuck, back-and-forth basketball all the way up until the end," said Hidden Valley coach Bill Jiron. Lakeview managed the largest lead of the game at 33-26 as the Honkers scored the first seven points of the third quarter, but Hidden Valley roared back to take a 47-43 lead into the fourth. The game was tied at 49 with 1:58 to play but the Mustangs capitalized on a defensive change by Lakeview that actually fell into Hidden Valley�s hands. With the Honkers switching from their zone defense, the Mustangs went inside to 6-foot-4, 250-pound senior Josh Hagemeyer. "We just isolated Hagemeyer and went to him twice and he converted with two big field goals to put us ahead by four," said Jiron. "Their inside guy (Jacob Denbrook) is 6-6 with long arms but he just couldn�t contain Hagemeyer. He�s a big boy." The Mustangs clinched the game at the free throw line as Kevin Ries and Colin Carr each converted two attempts. Carr finished with a team-high 16 points for Hidden Valley (14-10), which will play at Mazama on Thursday in a second round Skyline playoff contest. Ries chipped in 14 points and four steals for the Mustangs, who struggled a bit from the field by making 22 of 59 attempts, including 8 of 25 from 3-point range. Carl Fairburn had 17 points to lead Lakeview, which also got 16 from Neal Richards and 12 from Derek Strubel. Girls LAKEVIEW 64, PHOENIX 53 � At Lakeview, Phoenix led by one point at halftime, but Lakeview stormed back after intermission to advance to the second round of the conference playoffs. The Honkers (13-10) will visit Merlin on Thursday to play third-place North Valley. Phoenix, which tied Lakeview for fourth in the Skyline, completed the season with an 11-11 record. Lakeview took command of the game when it outscored the Pirates 17-6 in the third quarter and built as much as a 16-point lead in the final period. "We stepped up our defense in the second half," Lakeview coach Todd Limoges said. "We got more aggressive and did a better job of boxing out." Lakeview sophomore post Megan Albertson led all scorers with 19 points. Albertson accounted for 13 of Lakeview�s 17 first-quarter points. Senior guard Jamie Ruda added 14 points and four assists. For Phoenix, senior Chelsi Clark registered a team-high 15 points. "She (Clark) got banged around a lot but kept plugging away," said Limoges.
