Tavai forced a fumble to end Stanford’s comeback bid and No. 14 Southern California held off the No. 13 Cardinal 13-10 Saturday. With Stanford threatening to tie or take the lead, Tavai came from Kevin Hogan’s blindside to jar the ball loose. Scott Felix recovered at the Trojans 26-yard-line with 19 seconds to play, sealing new coach Steve Sarkisian’s first major victory at USC (2-0, 1-0) and upending the two-time defending Pac-12 champions. Javorius Allen ran for a career-high 154 yards, and Nelson Agholor had a career-high nine receptions for 91 yards to help the Trojans do just enough on offense to win at Stanford Stadium for the first time since 2008. Heidari also kicked a 25-yard field goal in the third quarter. The Trojans had gained 701 yards while running a conference-record 105 plays in a 52-13 win over Fresno State last week. But Stanford slowed down Cody Kessler and USC’s up-tempo offense most of the afternoon. Stanford outgained the Trojans 413 to 291 but had too many mistakes to overcome. The Cardinal committed two turnovers, eight penalties for 68 yards and missed two fields. Stanford’s 17-game home winning streak — which was the longest in the country — also ended. Kessler underwent an unspecified procedure on one of his toes this week but showed no effects of the injury. Instead, the Cardinal’s physical defense proved to be the problem. Kessler completed 15 of 22 passes for 135 yards but directed the Trojans when it mattered most. Sarkisian sent his offense on the field for a fourth-and-5 from the 35-yard line before calling a timeout to go for a field goal at the end of USC’s final drive. Heidari connected from 53 yards, turned around and pumped his arms at the Trojans faithful in the far corner of the stands. USC stunned Stanford in similar fashion last season to end a four-game losing streak in the series. Heidari kicked a 47-yard field goal with 19 seconds to play in USC’s 20-17 win over the Cardinal last year in Los Angeles. Stanford still had one last chance to erase those memories. Hogan completed passes of 7 and 19 yards to Ty Montgomery and 16 yards to Michael Rector to put the Cardinal in position to come back. Then Tavai rushed from the outside to knock the ball loose. NO. 11 UCLA 42, MEMPHIS 35: At Pasadena, Calif., Brett Hundley passed for 396 yards and three touchdowns, Paul Perkins rushed for two scores and UCLA survived a fourth-quarter scare. Thomas Duarte caught two TD passes and linebacker Myles Jack rushed for his first score of the season for the Bruins (2-0), who barely held off the underdog Tigers (1-1) despite 540 yards of total offense. Memphis safety Fritz Etienne returned an interception 17 yards for the tying score with 13:44 to play moments after Doroland Dorceus’ 40-yard TD run, stunning a Rose Bowl crowd expecting an easy win. But Duarte caught a 33-yard TD pass with 10:52 left, and the Bruins’ defense made three late stops to secure their fourth straight win in a home opener. NO. 17 ARIZONA STATE 58, NEW MEXICO 23: At Albuquerque, N.M., Taylor Kelly threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and D.J. Foster rushed for a career-high 216 yards for Arizona State. The Sun Devils (2-0) grabbed a 22-0 first-quarter lead behind rushing touchdowns from Deantre Lewis, Kelly and Kalen Ballage. The Lobos (0-2) pulled within 29-21 with 4:49 left in the second quarter, but Arizona State scored two touchdowns in the third quarter and New Mexico’s only two points in the second half came on a blocked extra point that Brandon Branch returned 98 yards. WASHINGTON 59, EASTERN WASHINGTON 52: At Seattle, Cyler Miles ran for three touchdowns rushing and threw for another in his season debut at quarterback, and Washington withstood seven touchdown passes from Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. Washington jumped to a 21-0 lead in less than eight minutes, saw that entire advantage evaporate under a barrage of Adams TD passes, then took advantage of a key turnover early in the fourth quarter to finally shake the FCS powerhouse. Down 45-44, Miles’ 5-yard TD run on the first play of the fourth quarter and the ensuing 2-point conversion pass to Kasen Williams put the Huskies (2-0) up 52-45. Eastern Washington (2-1) was driving for a potential tying score but Terence Grady was stripped at the Washington 16 and Travis Feeney recovered. Miles then scored on a 3-yard run with 7:45 left. Adams finished 31 of 46 for a career-high 475 yards. CAL 55, SACRAMENTO ST.: 14: At Berkeley, Calif., Jared Goff matched his career high of four touchdown passes, backup Luke Rubenzer threw for one and ran for another. Kenny Lawler caught two touchdown passes form Goff — including a leaping one-handed grab — while Maurice Harris and Darius Powe also scored on touchdown receptions. Goff went 17 of 22 for 229 yards. It was Cal’s most lopsided win since beating Presbyterian 63-12 in 2011. UTAH 59, FRESNO ST. 27: At Salt Lake City, Travis Wilson threw a career-high five touchdowns and Kenneth Scott and Dres Anderson each had a pair of scoring catches for Utah. Wilson completed 11 of 20 passes for 181 yards and left the game early in the third quarter with Utah ahead 38-7. In the third quarter, Utah’s Nate Orchard recovered a snap that went high over the Fresno quarterback’s head and ended on the Fresno State 1. Two plays later, Wilson threw his career-best fifth touchdown pass to Anderson. The next Utah possession ended with Wilson’s replacement, Kendal Thompson, scrambling 14 yards to make it 45-7 for Utah (2-0). COLORADO 41, UMASS 38: At Foxborough, Mass., Sefo Liufau threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns as Colorado overcame an 11-point third-quarter deficit. UMass had turned a 20-14 deficit into a 31-20 lead by scoring 17 points in a span of 2:54 late in the second quarter and early in the third. Then Colorado scored on its next three possessions on a 14-yard run by Christian Powell, and touchdown passes of 70 and 3 yards from Liufau to Nelson Spruce. Colorado (1-1) survived a scare from the Minutemen (0-2), who dropped to 2-24 since moving to the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2012.
