Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 15, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Nov. 15, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Nov. 15, 1915 CITIZENS PRESENT FAIR STATUARY TO ASHLAND PARK ASHLAND, Nov. 15 — This city is to have two important souvenirs from the Panama-Pacific exposition at San Francisco with which to adorn its parks, even if unsuccessful in having the Oregon building removed here. These acquisitions are a sure go. They have been bargained for in cold cash even to details as to freight rates and their transfer here is not dependent upon any hot air movement. Both are works of art in its highest sense, and are to be selected from the Italian exhibit at the big fair. The first is an elaborate fountain in colored Verona marble, surmounted by a Cupid toying with a swan. Minor effects are in keeping with major details. This work of art bears the legend, "Fiori di peshi," which being translated from the classic Italian into the vernacular means, "flower of peaches." It was selected by G.S. Butler on the occasion of his recent visit to the exposition subject to approval of D. Perozzi, another benefactor with Butler in deeding a tract towards the enlarged park area. Perozzi left for San Francisco in response to a wire from Butler, and the purchase was clinched on the spot. The consideration was $3,000, "besides the freight," which is no small item. The second work of art is the personal gift of G.S. Butler, as a memorial to his stepfather, Jacob Thompson, deceased, a pioneer of southern Oregon of 1847. It is a heroic statue of the immortal Lincoln, 6 feet 8 inches high, weighing 4,000 pounds. It is of Carrara marble, the work of A. Frilli, the sculptor, and represents the great emancipator extending the proclamation which freed millions of slaves. The gift from Mr. Butler is given in anticipation of the erection on the park grounds of a memorial pioneer building in which to house various historical and other features pertaining to the early settler period of Jackson County. The expense of the fountain will be met from a special fund set aside for the purpose. Both works of art will be released for shipment here at the close of the exposition, December 4. A companion statue to that of Lincoln — George Washington — was also expected to be added to the list at the hands of a benefactress residing in this city, but the matter is being held in abeyance for the time being at least.
