Did they ever figure out what caused it? Did it ever get any bigger? Did (could) they just fill it in? —Chris G., Central Point Did you get a sinking feeling thinking about it, Chris? We'd be happy to fill you in on what Central Point filled in. Let's go through your hat trick of questions one at a time. We're assuming you're talking about the sinkhole we reported on in 2012 that decided to give a big yawn behind a home on the corner of Maple and North Fifth streets and result in a hole that was originally estimated to be about a dozen feet across. Central Point public works director Matt Samitore said he's pretty confident the cause is an old well, dug there before the city's established water system. "We find them pretty periodically," Samitore said. "It's pretty common in old downtown." Some, he says, were lined with rock or brick. Others, like the one in question, were sloppier, hand-dug with no reinforced sides. "Unfortunately, they are the ones that cause the sinkholes," Samitore said, adding this one was likely brought on by rainfall.
