Cold snap yields to warmer temps on the weekend If your garden didn't freeze overnight, you'll probably escape this cold spell unscathed. Sunrise might be frosty today but forecasters expect a warming trend to extend through the weekend. Near-freezing temperatures were expected around dawn, but it would take temperatures of 28 degrees to harm tiny pears in Rogue Valley orchards, said Phil VanBuskirk, a fruit specialist at the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center. As early as Saturday, 70-degree days could return despite a weak cold front expected to creep into Southern Oregon late Saturday, said Chuck Glaser, of the National Weather Service's Medford station. Thursday's chilly wind may have made you think the calendar had turned back to March, but the day's high temperature of 59 fell far short of the lowest high (50 degrees) ever recorded for May 11. The normal high for May 11 is 71 degrees; the normal low is 42 degrees. Glaser said the cold snap shouldn't have surprised anyone. "It happens often in May," he said, most recently just two years ago. "One moves out, another one drops in," he said. "We still have one more to come through."
