The Quartz Fire and Mail Tribune photographer Drew Fleming received top billing with this photograph republished in Newsweek magazine's latest issue, dated Aug. 27, 2001. The photo, which appeared on the Mail Tribune's front page Aug. 12, shows Sean Hendrix of Grants Pass walking past a flare-up east of Yale Creek in the Little Applegate drainage. Hendrix is walking on forest road 500 in Shump Gulch. Contract firefighters sprayed foam on these flames, which seconds earlier had almost engulfed the road. The flare-up started spontaneously in a burned-out area, igniting unburned conifer needles and leaves. The photo in Newsweek, titled "A Thousand Words: A Season in Hell," covered two full pages and illustrated a brief story on 42 major fires across the West.
