Police arrested 28-year-old Joshua Ryan Brewer just after 8 p.m. Sunday after chasing him a block or so on Columbus Avenue, according to Medford police Lt. Kevin Walruff. Prior to the chase, police had been looking for Brewer on a warrant. An officer saw a white Ford Taurus, which Brewer has been known to drive, parked near the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Bryant Street, Walruff said. Brewer took off on foot but shortly gave up. When police arrested him at the intersection of Columbus Avenue and West Main Street at about 8:06 p.m., police found a baggie of methamphetamine and heroin in his pocket, according to an affidavit filed with Jackson County Circuit Court. Brewer was arraigned Monday on charges of heroin manufacture, delivery and possession, attempt to commit a class A felony and first-degree criminal mischief. Brewer also was arraigned on charges of second-degree kidnapping, coercion, fourth-degree assault, strangulation and harassment stemming from an alleged assault on July 30. He remained in the Jackson County Jail without bail late Monday. A court affidavit alleges Brewer beat a woman inside her home, located in the 600 block of Northwood Drive. According to the document, Brewer "grabbed the victim by her hair and dragged her inside her townhouse. He began to punch, kick, elbow and stomp the victim." The affidavit said Brewer then left the home and the woman required hospitalization for her injuries. Police said Brewer had additional warrants out for his arrest stemming from an elude case on Aug. 11 and a driving-while-suspended misdemeanor case from June, according to court documents.
