According to an affidavit filed Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court, investigators began looking into Dana Martin Garvin, 54, and Susan Marie Garvin, 51, of the 6200 block of Old Stage Road, after Adult Protective Services reported concerns the couple had been taking money from an elderly family member who suffered from Alzheimer's. Detectives determined the Garvins took more than $95,000 from the victim between July 2013 and April 2015, the affidavit said. It said investigators also learned the couple had filed quit-claim deeds with the Jackson County Recorder's Office for a home they shared with the victim. The deeds allegedly bore the forged signature of the victim's deceased husband. The Garvins accessed the victim's accounts through power of attorney, but they used the money for personal gain, including paying off personal credit cards and vehicle loans, according to the sheriff's office. They also forged real estate documents after stealing a notary stamp, it said in a news release. Both Garvins face two counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment and three counts of aggravated first-degree theft under charging documents filed Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court. Susan Garvin also has been charged with two counts of first-degree forgery, misapplication of entrusted property and obtaining the execution of documents by deception. Both were lodged in the Jackson County Jail but have since been released on their own recognizance pending further proceedings. Court records show neither of the Garvins had prior felony convictions in Oregon.
