The 2001 Crater High graduate posted a win at the Olympic Trials, giving Wilson a shot at a spot on the Olympic squad. He fights again today in the quarterfinals. In his first fight since the U.S. Amateur Championships, Wilson improved his record to 65-16 by beating Nicolai Firtha of Atwater, Ohio. Firtha was slated to challenge Wilson in the title match at the U.S. Amateur Championships in January but did not participate because of an injured thumb. Wilson took a mere two-point lead into the final session of the four-round bout, rallying for the decisive 13-7 win in the final minutes. "This is a big deal," said Joe Pedrojetti, founder of Bulldog Boxing. "This is a kid who has an opportunity to make our Olympic team." Advertisement Wilson will face Navy champion Israel Spencer today in a match that advances the winner to the semifinals. The double-elimination tournament will send the champions of both the winner’s and loser’s brackets to Cleveland for the final stage of the Olympic qualifying trials.
