Mahala Conner, 80, of Myers Flat, Calif., and William Spring, 79, of Miranda, Calif., were pronounced dead at the scene of the 1 p.m. accident near the Oregon-California border, Oregon State Police Lt. Tanya Henderson said. Police believe Conner’s husband, Darryl Conner, 86, fell asleep at the wheel of a 2000 Toyota van that crashed into several trees after leaving the road and sliding down an embankment. Two other people were in the van at the time, including Spring’s wife, Betty Spring, 79, and William Hughes, 76, of Rio Dell, Calif. They were taken to Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass with serious injuries, as was Darryl Conner. Henderson said Mahala Conner was the only passenger who was not wearing a seat belt when the wreck occurred. The southbound lane of Highway 199 was closed for nearly four hours while police investigated.
