Paulette "Paulie" Brading Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 15, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Jan. 15, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Paulette "Paulie" Brading passed away peacefully at home from complications of cancer January 11, 2015 with husband Ron Fox by her side. Paulie was born January 20, 1948, in Seattle to Paul and Ettie Brading. She attended elementary and high school in Grants Pass, graduating in 1965. She earned Bachelor and Masters degrees from Oregon State University and Masters degrees in counseling psychology and reading at the University of Oregon. True to her first alma mater, Paulie was a devoted OSU Beavers fan. Paulie was drawn to education early on and had a lifelong dedication to improving the lives of students. Her first position was at Howard Elementary in Medford where she taught first grade. Coincidentally, she capped her commitment to education by serving five years on the Medford School District Board of Education and was elected Board Chair. Her greatest focus was on improving the achievements of the District's disadvantaged students whom she felt deserved the best education possible. Paulie held positions as a teacher and school administrator in Scappoose and Beaverton, Ore., as well as communities in Northern California; Fairbanks, Alaska; and West Hartford, Conn. While serving as an elementary principal in the Beaverton School District, Paulie was invited to be a teaching graduate at Harvard University and spent a year as a Principal in Residence. There, she served under Prof. Roland S. Barth whom Paulie considered her most significant mentor. While principal at Morley Elementary School in the West Hartford School District, Paulie's school received a Presidential Award for Staff Excellence. Following a long tenure as a principal in West Hartford, Paulie returned to Southern Oregon to care for her ailing mother and held school administrative positions with the Three Rivers School District. Her last post was principal of Riverdale Elementary School in Southwest Portland. In 1964 Paulie met Ron Fox at a summer dance at the Grants Pass Armory. After high school graduation, Paulie followed Ron to Oregon State University and they were married June 17, 1967 in Grants Pass. During Ron's tour of duty with the U.S. Navy in Danang, Vietnam, Paulie returned to OSU and completed her Bachelor and Master's degrees in Education. Paulie and Ron divorced in 1971 and lived separate lives until reconnecting in 1998. Ron's mother had maintained contact with Paulie and the couple re-married September 17, 2004. When she returned to Southern Oregon in 2006, Paulie quickly became active in many community organizations. She was named to Medford School Board in 2008 and elected to a full term in 2009. She served as chair of the Jackson County Democratic Party and was elected on the first ballot as a delegate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver. Paulie was nominated by Jackson County Commissioners to serve on the County's Public Health Advisory Committee and she chaired that group. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Family Nurturing Center in Medford. Paulie is survived by her father, Paul Brading of Grants Pass; sister, Colleen Brading Rugh of Ridgefield, Wash.; and brother, John Brading of Fairbanks. Her mother, Ettie Brading passed away in 2002. Paulie is also survived by niece, Rachel Vorberg Rugh, Fort Worth, Texas; and stepchildren, Brian (Erika) Fox and Jessica Fox (Mike) Shinneman, all of Newberg, Ore. Paulie adored grandsons, Jordan and Jacob Shinneman and Atticus Fox, who with affection called her Nana. Consistent with Paulie's wishes, the family will host a celebration of her life from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Sat., January 24, 2015 at the Imperial Event Center, 40 N. Front Street, Medford. The family invites all Paulie's friends to join them in honoring her and sharing stories of how she affected their lives.
