Henley, Lakeview dominate volleyball all-star voting By FRANK SILOW Henley and Lakeview went 1-2 in Skyline Conference volleyball this year, and the all-conference team reflects just that. Unbeaten Henley and runner-up Lakeview placed five of the six players on the first team and shared the player-of-the-year award. Also, Henley's Chuck Shannon was tabbed coach of the year. North Valley senior setter Elena Mendoza was the only player from another school on the first team. Henley senior setter Breanna Maupin and Lakeview junior outside hitter Jamie Ruda shared the top-player honor. Completing the first team were Henley's Brandi McElfresh and Alice Meyers and Lakeview's Kristi Albertson. Phoenix coach Tom Murphy had praise for the top players: "Maupin was the key to their offense. She is a great attacking setter. Ruda is probably the best all-around volleyball player in the league." Mendoza helped North Valley reach the state playoffs. The Knights finished fourth in the conference but defeated third-place Phoenix in a league playoff to advance to state before losing to Philomath. "She (Mendoza) got better as the year went along," said Murphy. "She was a key to them getting better. The one thing that was amazing about her is she gets to every second ball and improves every second touch. That's what we hire setters to do." Murphy's daughter, Janene, was the Pirates' top selection as a second-teamer. Phoenix's three-year starting setter repeated as a second-team pick. "She was the catalyst that made our engine go," said Murphy. "Her and Mendoza have a lot of similarities. They're not very big and aren't attackers. They are good at distributing the ball and making passes into better sets." Phoenix senior Beth Nikodym and junior Sutton Jackson were selected to the third team.
