Comets' comebacks generate sweep of Vikes Prep roundup KLAMATH FALLS -- Crater capped a tiring week of baseball by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at Mazama, 6-4 and 7-5. The sweep helped Crater improve to 7-0 on the season, winning all seven games within a six-day stretch. "That was a big week for us," Crater coach Chuck Dominiak said. "It was a good effort on the kids' part because I think they're a little tired right now. It was a gut-up performance today." The Comets were forced to rally in their last at-bat to win each game, scoring twice to break a 4-4 tie in the opener and five times to overcome a 4-2 deficit in the nightcap. Crater led 4-0 in the first game, only to have Mazama roar back with a two-run double by Jake Nelson and a two-run homer by Brad Vest on the next pitch. "We went from 4-zip to 4-4 real quick," Dominiak said. The Comets rallied in the top of the seventh as Casey Campbell scored on a two-out single by Kenny Strait. After a single by Jason Korthals, Craig Knight drove in Strait. Campbell also had a strong day on the mound, striking out eight with no walks in seven innings of work. Four of his five hits allowed came in the sixth inning. In the nightcap, Graham Foster slammed a bases-loaded triple to spark the rally, with K.J. Chubb adding an RBI double and T.J. Pardee an RBI single to cap Crater's last-inning comeback. "We came through when we needed to in the last inning again," Dominiak said. "But we gave them a couple runs early in the game we never should have given them." Campbell paced the Comets with a 5-for-7 effort with two runs scored in the doubleheader, while Knight, Korthals and Foster each had four hits. THURSTON 5-0, ROSEBURG 4-10 -- At Springfield, John Zumwalt, Mike McInerney and Jed Brewer combined on a three-hit shutout in the second game as Roseburg salvaged a split of the non-league twin bill. Brad Coen's two-run single triggered a six-run first inning for the Indians in the nightcap. In the opener, Thurston's Ryan Christner belted a two-run homer off Roseburg starter Thys Kuitert in the first inning and the Colts added three runs in the fourth. The Indians got RBI singles from Kuitert, Richie Charles and Kevin Linderman in the top of the fifth to draw within 5-4, but got no closer. The split left the Indians with a 2-4 record. Softball CRATER SPLITS -- At Central Point, Crater (4-2) nearly pulled off a sweep in North Medford Invitational action, topping Mountain View of Vancouver, Wash., 6-1, after falling shy to Oregon City, 6-4. The Comets trailed 6-0 in the opener only to rally in the bottom of the seventh with four runs on four hits and a walk. Kara Ray supplied the big blast with a two-run double, only to have the Pioneers thwart the comeback attempt. Lindsey Perry came on in relief of Emily Wiley in the second inning, allowing only three hits and two runs in the seventh. Despite the strong effort, Perry was pinned with the loss thanks to the late rally. Oregon City used three walks, two wild pitches, two passed balls and only one hit to score four runs in the first. The Comets regrouped in the second game, with Andrea Perdue gaining her second win after allowing only four hits to Mountain View of Vancouver, Wash. Five Crater players notched two hits, with Val Lammon and Addie Wiersma leading the charge. Lammon was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Wiersma was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and run scored. MAZAMA 13-4, EAGLE POINT 1-8 -- At Eagle Point, after a rough first game, the Eagles (2-4) roared back to claim a split in a non-conference doubleheader. Mazama had been scheduled to host the double-dip, only to have snow on its field force an early-morning change. The Vikings stormed to a 13-0 lead after four innings to clinch the opener in five innings, with Cindy Josephson scoring Eagle Point's lone run in the fourth. After trailing 3-0 in the nightcap, the Eagles regrouped to score eight of the final nine runs in the contest. Sophomore Jaime Brewington picked up her first varsity win in the nightcap. Alaina Corliss paced the Eagles with two runs scored on a 2-for-3 effort, while Connie McGonagle added two runs and two stolen bases in a 1-for-2 outing. Cassie Dodenhoff had a key two-run single to put the Eagles ahead for good in the fourth. The Pelicans had a 4-0 lead after 2 innings of the opening game, but Bend's Anna Leeman smashed a grand slam in the bottom of the third to tie the game and the host Lava Bears eventually pulled out a one-run win.
