Shifted from midfield to forward, senior Jaime Escobedo rewarded his coach and teammates with a cluster of goals as the Pirates went unbeaten in the Skyline Conference. But it was Escobedo who was rewarded recently with player-of-the-year honors as voted by conference coaches. "Jaime is an excellent multipurpose player," said Flenner. "He draws so much attention that it makes everyone else on the team better." Escobedo, a repeat performer on the top squad, was joined by three teammates on the first team: senior defender Nathan Bursk, senior midfielder Uriel Castillo and senior goalkeeper John Rowden. Advertisement Flenner was named coach of the year after guiding his team to a 15-2 record and the Class 3A state semifinals. Henley placed three players on the first team in senior defender Sam Frasier, junior midfielder Javier Barajas and junior striker Philip Pena. Mario Barajas (forward) and Genero Campos (sweeper) represented Mazama, while Hidden Valley’s Tyler Nelson (defender) and North Valley’s Ben Mause (forward) also made the first unit. Escobedo finished the season with 26 goals and 11 assists. A majority of his production came after the position change. Flenner decided on the move after watching his team struggle to finish on scoring opportunities. "The team hadn’t really jelled yet," said Flenner, "and coach Flenner became real impatient. "I asked (Escobedo) how he felt about moving up and he just says, ‘Sweet.’ The move seemed to make everybody better." Castillo, nicknamed Cookie, was instrumental on a team that finished with 67 goals in Skyline play. He also made the first team last season. "Uriel would be the guy in the business world who is a big silent partner," said Flenner. "He’s the guy behind the scenes who’s not really concerned about getting his name in lights, which is a rarity in soccer. "If we went to a category on assists of assists, then Cookie would be the leader. We’re going to miss him." Bursk scored seven goals and assisted on nine others despite playing defender, while Rowden allowed only four goals in 16 games to repeat as conference keeper of the year. "He’s almost like a Star Trek shield," said Flenner, describing Rowden’s stingy attributes in goal. "To be named goalie of the year two straight seasons is incredible." Phoenix also placed four members on the second team in juniors Kyle McKinnis and Mario Alcauter and sophomores Albaro Gonzalez and Aaron Detrick. Hidden Valley, which also advanced to the semifinals, matched the Pirates with four second-teamers in juniors Shay Campbell and Zach Hannah and sophomores Joe Guevara and Steven Shafer. Mazama’s Jose Melgoza, a first-team honoree last season, and Jonathan Dawson made the second unit, while Henley’s Zach Sunitsch rounded out the squad. FIRST TEAM Player Pos. Team Yr.
