But shoddy fielding in the twin bill proved costly to the RiverDogs in a pair of one run loses, 6-5 and 4-3. In the opener, five Southern Oregon errors led to four unearned runs, including the gamewinner in the bottom of the eighth. The RiverDogs (5-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth after a leadoff double by Phil Ouellette and John Jefferson’s sacrifice fly. After the Spartans took a 2-1 lead, Southern Oregon went ahead 5-2 with four runs in the sixth. Jefferson contributed to the rally with a RBI double and Ryan Heil added a two-run single. Advertisement With the scored tied 5-all in the eighth, Eugene took advantage of a two-out, two-base throwing error by Jefferson to put Tyler Norman on second. Sam Kirby followed with a RBI single to give the Spartans the margin of victory. In the second game, three of Eugene’s four runs were unearned. Mike McCormick’s two-out solo home run in the sixth provided the Spartans with the winning hit. Southern Oregon scored in the first when Ken Halpin walked, was sacrificed to second and scored on Eric Beasly’s single. Tyler Brown’s two-run homer in the bottom of the first highlighted a three-run outburst for Eugene. In the fifth, Halpin opened the inning with a home run to cut the River Dogs deficit to 3-2. Ouellette doubled with one out in the seventh and scored when shortstop Norman dropped a pop up by Beasly. Pinch runner Kenny Strait stole second, but Brett Timmerman took a called third strike from Eugene pitcher Mike Bauman to end the game. SOUTHERN OREGON CLASSIC — At Eagle Point, Eagle Point won two games Sunday and finished second in the two-day tournament with a 3-1 record. Fairfield, Calif., went undefeated in four games to win the event. In its first game Sunday, Eagle Point defeated Humboldt from Eureka, Calif., 7-3. Eagles pitcher Shasta Bateman blanked Humboldt through the first five innings while Eagle Point built a 4-0 lead. Bateman surrendered three runs in the sixth but the Eagles (5-3, 1-1 Area 4) answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Eagle Point took advantage of three errors and A.J. Nichols’ RBI double during the rally. In Game 2, four Eagle Point pitchers held Grants Pass to two hits in a 7-3 victory. Ryan Augino paced the Eagles’ attack with two hits, one run and one RBI. In other games Sunday, Fairfield defeated Jesuit, 6-2; Fairfield topped Humboldt 16-9; and Jesuit downed Grants Pass, 16-7. CENTRAL POINT 11-13, BROOKINGS-HARBOR 1-3 — At Central Point, Chuckie Grabowski and Matt Hunt both went 4-for-5 and drove in three runs to pace Central Point to the American Legion A non-league doubleheader sweep at Anhorn Field. The Comets (6-3) received complete-game pitching performances from Daniel Lovemark and Shane Ogle. The two Comet pitchers combined to give up only five hits in the twin bill. In the first game, Central Point also received two hits from Charlie Reina and Tyler Davis, while Tony Murphy added two hits in the nightcap. NORTH MEDFORD MAVERICKS 18-3, ROSEBURG HORIZON 17-10 — Tyler Lake was the hero for North Medford in the first game of the American Legion A non-league doubleheader at North Medford High Saturday. Lake’s grand slam capped a nine-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game 17-all. Then Lake’s two-out RBI single scored James Horsley with the winning run in the ninth. Horsley reached on a one-out double. Lake had three hits, five RBIs and scored three runs in the opener. Darren Bruhns, Logan Odom and Kyle Lamson also added three hits apiece for the Mavericks (4-6, 3-3 Area 4). In Game 2, North got two hits each from Mike Longmire, Trevor McCleery and Zack James.
