SOU wrestlers fail to wrap up conference title TACOMA, Wash. - Southern Oregon University wrestling coach Mike Ritchey had a new experience at the Northwest Wrestling Conference Championships Saturday. Ritchey experienced losing the conference title for the first time in the third annual tournament. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University from Prescott, Ariz., ended the Raiders' two-year reign as champion by edging SOU in the seven-school event, 122-118. Southern Oregon was attempting to win its 23rd conference or regional crown since 1966 and the seventh since 1994. "This was my first silver," said Ritchey. "There were some head-to-head matchups we didn't win in the finals. We went toe-to-toe with them (Embry-Riddle). We got in a few jabs but took a couple on the chin too. I'd have to consider Embry-Riddle one of the favorites to win nationals." Raider junior Chris Huntley won the 165-pound title with a fall against Embry-Riddle's David Rivera in one minute. At 197, Southern Oregon's Wes Balensifer and Mike Sills advanced to the finals. Balensifer was officially awarded the default when the two Raider wrestlers didn't go against each other. Southern Oregon's Devin Parks (184) and Mike Whitehead (285) both lost to Embry-Riddle opponents in the finals. Southern's Colin Murphy (141) also lost in the finals on an injury default to James Guizar of Menlo. "We were prepping for the national meet," said Ritchey. "I would have liked to win this tournament as a team, but it will give us a little more fire in our belly to head to nationals with." Southern Oregon will attempt to defend its NAIA national title March 1-2 in Great Falls, Mont.
