The average price for regular unleaded gasoline in Southern California is $3.01 per gallon. Which price would you rather pay? Why such a price difference? There are many reasons why energy costs are higher in California. Among the reasons are California's restrictive environmental requirements such as their cap-and-trade scheme. Cap and trade is designed to make the use of fossil fuels more expensive. That it does. And, eventually, everyone pays more for anything touched by higher energy costs, especially harming low-income households. The Healthy Climate Bill, to be considered by Oregon's Legislature, resembles California's cap-and-trade experiment. We are assured that its cost will be borne by big oil or big coal or big something. That defies how economics works in the real world. The little guy always ends up paying the freight. If there is to be an Oregon Healthy Climate Bill, put it to a vote of the people. This is too costly to allow one political faction to force it upon us. Let Oregon's voters have the final say. Doug Dusenberry Gold Hill Don't subsidize miners Gold miners want the State of Oregon to “drop dead” for taking justified action to protect clean water and habitat for salmon from suction dredge gold mining. These are the some of the same characters that called up an armed militia to defend them against the federal government this last summer when they were caught violating federal mining rules on our public land. Now they want to claim that the state has no right to stand up to the federal government and protect public waters from damaging mining practices like suction dredging. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our rivers and streams are publicly owned and managed for the benefit of all of us, and it is crazy to allow public resources to be trashed for the benefit of a few angry miners. Our streams and rivers provide us with clean drinking water and produce salmon that truly support our local economy for the long haul. I look forward to the quick passage and enforcement of rules that prohibit suction dredge gold mining in Oregon’s spectacular river systems. Alex Budd Grants Pass Tax the wealthy Amazing how often people forget that during wartime, The USA has always raised taxes on the wealthy to 60 percent and more to pay for it until the Vietnam war that paid for it from the blue collar workers, and that is due to the party that says Ronald Reagan is their hero. Why shouldn't the people who profit from it the most pay for it as well? They are the ones who lobbied the hardest for our current fights in Iraq and more.
