The undefeated Crusaders (8-0, 3-0 District 3) completed the first round of district play with three home victories. Staver took a through ball from junior Matt Bladek and beat UVC goalkeeper Jeff Masters one-on-one. "It was a classic Staver finish," St. Mary’s coach Matt Faurot said. "He had a person on his back the whole time, but was able to shield them off in a full sprint. He had the ability to look up and find where the keeper wasn’t." Junior goalkeeper Dillon Bourke had three saves en route to the shutout. Advertisement Senior sweeper Ryan Burt came up with a timely save for the Crusaders midway through the opening half. With Bourke out of position on a Monarchs’ corner kick, Burt rejected a header destined for the net by Cody Wittrock. "It was a sure goal, but Ryan was in the right place at the right time," said Faurot. "He had the quickness to head the ball out." Junior fullback Eric Melchiori anchored the defense for St. Mary’s, which was the Class 2A state runner-up last year. St. Mary’s outshot Umpqua, 23-15. "In the second half we had more chances," said Faurot. "We were a little off on some of our finishing touches." Skyline Boys PHOENIX 10, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Phoenix, Phoenix had eight players score in the league match, led by sophomore Kyle McKinnis and senior Jason Lockett, who each recorded a pair of goals. McKinnis scored in the second minute on a pass from Lockett to give the Pirates an early advantage. Phoenix’s lead stretched to 7-0 by the end of the first half on goals from seniors Noe Fletes, Kevin Cowley and Adam Machado. Sophomore Kylar Wilson also chipped in an unassisted goal in the first half of play. Phoenix (8-0, 9-1) senior Brian Bones contributed on both ends of the field, scoring one goal in the final minutes of the game after playing a solid match at central defender. District 6 Girls PHOENIX 5, NORTH VALLEY 0 — At Merlin, the fifth-ranked Pirates scored 30 seconds into the match and never looked back in the shutout. Sophomore forward Marci Klimek found the net from five yards out off an assist from Sarah Kiefer. Kiefer scored 15 minutes later to put Phoenix (6-2, 4-0 District 6) up 2-nil. Larrisa Wiltrout came within one goal of a hat trick with scores in the 23rd and 73rd minutes. Kat Cox also scored. Phoenix coach John Doty credited a tough Pirate midfield for limiting North Valley to one shot on goal. Jaclyn Unruh earned the shutout in the net. ROGUE RIVER 3, MAZAMA 1 — At Rogue River, forwards Larae Rojas and Jeanette Harryman staked Rogue River to a 2-0 lead. The Chieftains (3-5-1, 2-3 District 6) led 2-1 at halftime, then got an insurance goal from senior midfielder Jill Artoff at the 65th minute. HENLEY 4, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1 — At Klamath Falls, Henley (2-3 District 6) scored three goals early in the second half to break open a close match against the Challengers. Cascade Christian (3-2) defender Natasha Gerig limited Heather Olliffe, one of the top scorers in District 6, to one first-half goal in the losing effort. Megan Mangles, Christina Hamlin and Haylie Hartman also scored goals for the Hornets. The Challengers scored their goal in the 71st minute by Molly Gathergoal off a cross from Katie O’Brien. ST. MARY’S 7, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Cave Junction, junior Liz Tribelhorn led St. Mary’s with a pair of scores in the non-conference match. St. Mary’s jumped out early on back-to-back scores from Tribelhorn and senior Alex Tomlinson, both within the first two minutes of play. The Crusaders went into halftime with a 4-0 lead as Tribelhorn recorded her second goal and freshman Katie Sinner added another. Freshman Aundrea Roberts and junior Britta Beckstead anchored a tough St. Mary’s defense at the outside defender positions.
