One particular concern is over water used to grow marijuana. According to the Mail Tribune, there are 6,070 licensed marijuana growers in Jackson County. I believe each plant uses about one gallon of water daily. Add this up and the outlook for sustainable water is grim. When water tables go down, wells dry up or may get contaminated with large levels of chemicals such as arsenic. Eventually, low levels may lead to rationing of household water. This will affect all citizens. There is the possibility the natural landscape will also dry up leading to blowing dust and the prevalence of wildfires. Unfortunately, I speak from experience. Our government officials are at the crossroads. Officials should act now to monitor water usage on all properties whether cannabis farms or households. We are facing a countywide catastrophe. How is it that a story about sixth-grade children moving to middle school is front page news, when the U.S. set to deploy special forces to Iraq to fight the Islamic state is buried on page A7? No wonder people think we do nothing about fighting IS. Not only that, you show a picture of a kindergarten class with a story about sixth-graders. Really? Marcia Linstrum Rogue River A breath of fresh air I want to thank conservative KMED radio for alleviating any and all concern I might have about global climate change and our need to make any lifestyle changes. I have read scientific journals, listened to climate scientists, experts and the leaders of most countries, and was concerned that maybe we had a role in the problem. The ability of conservative talk show hosts to take time out of pushing fear of Islam and Obama to decrease my fear of climate change is a breath of fresh air. These men, with no political ax to grind, and independent of any lobbying interests, took time to finally deal with this controversial issue. They have guaranteed me 100 percent that climate change is a hoax, a lie and only a conspiracy to destroy our capitalist economy and replace it with socialism. If the scientists are wrong, we end up with a cleaner planet and a diverse energy economy. If Rush is wrong, our children’s children will suffer the significant effects of our inattention. Are we really willing to roll the dice based upon the words of paid shills for the fossil fuel industry and ALEC? Sad, so many of us believe the hucksters. Ken Gosling Talent The only party in denial When it comes to the most critical issue of our time — what humans can do to mitigate the long term effects of the accelerated climate change we have caused — the Republican Party is the only major political party in the democratic world that continues to deny that there is even a problem worth addressing. Even worse, while the leaders of over 100 countries meet in Paris to tackle this problem, congressional Republicans work to actively sabotage the process. Because there are an enormous number of variables, making exact predictions about when specific climate events will occur is problematic. But climate scientists have a very broad consensus about the direction we're heading and its causes. Reasonable people, no matter which party they belong to, need to ask themselves whether they choose to believe the scientific community or one partisan group of politicians. Your children's futures are at stake.
