Fire officials estimate the blaze on the fringe of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area was 15-percent contained. Helicopters are being used to shuttle firefighters and equipment, and to drop water on the fire. Firefighters are using a special bleach solution on the helicopter water buckets to reduce the spread of Port Orford root rot disease during water-drop operations, according to a news update issued by fire officials today. Burnout operations along the south perimeter (Forest Road 454 and Trail 1215) will continue today. Prepared containment lines include existing roads and trails, many of which were used during the 2002 Biscuit fire. Firefighters will use hand-carried drip torches to light fuels to create a black buffer between the active fire and containment lines. A helicopter with a drip torch will add further depth to the containment lines, the release said. Crews will mop up and hold the east containment lines burned out from the previous two days of operations to create the desired cold, black buffer. Other perimeters of the Buckskin fire did not move overnight. Two 10-person fire crews continue to monitor fire behavior on the west flank. Communities in the Illinois and Rogue valleys may continue to be impacted by smoke. Those sensitive to smoke should take appropriate actions. Fire officials said 600 people are working the fire, including 11 hand crews, seven dozers, six engines, 13 water tenders and 11 helicopters.
