LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, June 28 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 28, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 28, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Rest area beggars I've recently had the opportunity to travel extensively in Washington, Idaho, Montana and South Dakota, and I can honestly say Oregon has something that the rest of those states don't have. That's beggars in every rest area! Why do we allow this in Oregon? I'm sure it makes a good impression on the tourists. It doesn't give me and my wife a warm and fuzzy feeling when we have to walk around three or four beggars to use a rest room. I can imagine how a tourist feels. Joe Alonzo Jacksonville Gun risk negligible Alex Sol is concerned that his daughter will not suffer gun violence. Using CDC numbers, there were 32,000 gun deaths last year. Sixty percent were suicide —19,200; 3 percent accidental — 960; 4 percent justified — 1,280; 33 percent homicides — 10,560; 80 of homicides were gang-related — 8,448. That leaves 1,712 people in a country with the population of 312 million. You have a 0.00010256410256 percent chance of death by firearm. If his daughter is not part of a gang and doesn't commit a crime or plan on committing suicide, she has a 0.000000856410256 percent chance of death by a firearm. Mr. Sol has been punked by the ever-faithful drive-by media and our elected officials. John Dunn Jacksonville Clinton is best choice I voted for Bernie Sanders in the primary because he offered solutions to the imbalance of power between corporations and people. I believe he’s had a positive influence on nominee Hillary Clinton, whom I’ll support. First, I’ll dare to say something positive about Donald Trump. Notwithstanding his pandering to evangelicals, he doesn’t intend to transform our democratic republic into a theocracy, as do presidential aspirants Cruz, Huckabee and Santorum. The latter three fanatics politicize religion through offshoots of the defunct Moral Majority organization that hijacked the Republican Party in the 1980s. They cannot distinguish between religious freedom and religious tyranny. Hillary Clinton makes such distinction. She is highly intelligent, broadly educated and well-versed in constitutional law. Moreover, she’s shown remarkable stamina in withstanding relentless Republican attacks. Hillary Clinton is the best choice for president. She’ll lead in a responsible way. We cannot afford, much less survive, another destructive Republican administration. Marie Arvette Medford Keep the animals caged I read daily in the Mail Tribune that criminals are being released from the Jackson County Jail because of overcrowding. The latest was in the MT article "Kids alert police of break-in," on page 2A June 22. In this case, Sanchez-Portillo was charged Monday afternoon with contempt of court from an older case after he was arrested by police for eluding police during a traffic stop, then forced his way into a woman's apartment while being chased by police. On the next day he was released because of overcrowding and broke into a house with only children inside. In this case and ones like them, Jackson County (the sheriff and the administration)is holding its citizens hostage for more money for jails instead of finding a way to keep animals like this caged. Catching the criminals is only part of the job. Holding them until they can produce bail or are prosecuted and incarcerated is the other part. One part does not work without the other. That is the main reason for a need of government. So do something! Build a tent city like the Arizona sheriff if needed, but keep the animals caged!
