Betancourt had been sidelined since straining a muscle in his upper back in Baltimore on April 19 in which the Indians lost two key relievers to injury in the same inning. Matt Miller sustained a right elbow injury in the sixth inning of an 18-9 loss to the Orioles and will miss the rest of the 2006 season. Betancourt then came on, allowed a three-run homer to Jay Gibbons, and made three pitches to Ramon Hernandez before leaving with his injury. Cleveland has gone 8-16 since. A current six-game losing streak has dropped the Indians (17-21) to fourth place in the AL Central. Betancourt had a 6.43 ERA in eight appearances before being injured. A year ago, the 31-year-old Venezuelan went 4-3 with one save and a 2.79 ERA in 54 appearances as Cleveland led the AL with a 3.61 ERA, including a league-low 2.80 mark by relievers. Guthrie, the former three-sport star and valedictorian at Ashland High School, had no record and a 4.63 ERA in six games in relief, allowing 11 hits in 112/3 innings.
