Jackson County Fire District No. 3 and police responded to reports of flames coming from 151 Glenn Way just before 11:30 p.m. Monday. "Our first engine crew on scene reported 30- to 50-percent involvement," said battalion chief Mike Calhoun, adding the flames already had spread to a neighbor's garage being used as a workshop. Calhoun said the home's occupants — two adults and two minors — made it out safely, but a pet cat perished. Crews called for a second alarm about seven minutes after arriving because of the danger of the fire spreading farther. In all, six engines and about 25 firefighters responded, Calhoun said. Responders had the flames under control in about 30 minutes but stayed on the scene for several hours afterward to make sure the fire was completely out. Nearly half of the 1,800-square-foot house was burned, with $100,000 in estimated damage, Calhoun said. The detached garage is a total loss, though no vehicles were inside. "It was just set up like a shop," Calhoun said. The final crew members left the scene about 3 a.m. The cause has not been determined.
