I am so sick of hearing people complain about black bears, deer, and now even turkeys. I love having them on my property. Of course they are wandering into town; as dry as it's been, they are hungry and thirsty. I really don’t think they are looking to eat you, your kids, or your pets. It's very upsetting to hear people complain because their flowers are being eaten. If you don’t like wildlife, move! I love watching my turkey families, watching the little ones grow. I count them every day to make sure they are all there. I have two does with twins, and I look forward to seeing them every day, too. As for black bears, they are more afraid of you. And anyone with half a brain knows not to mess with a sow with babies. As for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, I have no use for them. Absent treatment, my prognosis was "dead within two months." With four rounds of chemotherapy, total body irradiation and a bone marrow transplant, that prognosis rose to a 50 percent chance of being alive in two years. Twenty years later, I am glad I accepted the advice of the experts. I could have sought some charlatan offering contradictory advice, telling me what I wanted to hear, and encouraging me to deny the diagnosis. But I decided my best chance was accepting corroborated expert advice We are in the same boat with climate change! Despite the claims of charlatans, over 97 percent of climate scientists accept the conclusion that our planet is warming and we are responsible through emissions of atmospheric pollution. We could deny the advice of the experts, stick our heads in the sand, ignore the evidence around us that results from the warming planet, and thereby force future generations to suffer the consequences of our ignorance and inaction. Alternatively, we could address the problem now before it’s too late. If advising us today, would our grandchildren urge us to leave them a livable or an unlivable planet? Alan Journet Jacksonville That sinking feeling Referencing Mr. Raymond Steinbroner's letter declaring that if Trump becomes president of the U.S., he will "say adios and adieu": First off, I don't remember anyone threatening to leave the country if Barack Hussein Obama got elected. I do remember that sinking feeling I had when it was announced that Obama had won the election and proclaimed he would "fundamentally change America." However, it didn't compare to the feeling I have now that he has kept that promise, thereby making us less safe, more divided and weaker economically and militarily. Although I am not a huge Trump supporter, I will say the same thing I would say to Hollywood types like Jon Stewart who threatened similarly: Don't let the door hit you. Rick Nelson Medford Temperature was lower Regarding the letter of John Robert Scheelen in the Sept. 29 Mail Tribune on the temperature in Iraq: The maximum temperature ever recorded in the Mideast was 129 degrees in Tivat Tvsi, Israel, in 1942. The "feels like" temperatures in Samawah, Iraq, was 159 degrees a couple of weeks ago, but the actual temperature was 119.5.
