Bradford Fish, a retired master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, said he was shocked to pull up to his house in the 800 block of West 13th Street to see his flag severely damaged by flames. "You see these sorts of things on the news, but you never expect it to happen to you," said Fish, 45. Medford police are investigating the case, which was reported as a vandalism, said Sgt. Roy Skinner of the Medford Police Department’s detective division. The flag was hanging off a banner pole attached to Fish’s front porch. Fish has since replaced the charred flag with a new one, and trained a floodlight on it so the flag can fly at night. Fish used to take the old flag down at sunset. "It just makes me more conscious of showing support for my country," he said. The charred flag likely will be turned over to the Veterans of Foreign Wars for proper disposal, he said. Fish served 22 years in the Air Force, and was stationed in Turkey doing communications work during the Gulf War in 1991. He retired two years ago.
