The hazard-reduction burning will continue as the weather allows, forestry officials said. "They have a pretty small window of opportunity," Oregon Department of Forestry fire-prevention specialist Dennis Turco said. Planned burns must meet smoke-management rules designed to keep smoke out of populated areas. Also, the unwanted vegetation must be dry enough to burn, but weather that is too hot or dry creates a risk of the flames escaping, he explained. "They try to do as much as possible when they can burn," Turco said. A recorded message about prescribed burns at the Medford Interagency Communication Center said the Bureau of Land Management planned on Tuesday to burn 100 acres southwest of Jacksonville and 60 acres east of Buncom. The Rogue River National Forest had burns set on 200 acres in the Quartz Creek area and 105 acres near Wagner Gap. For a daily updated recording of prescribed burning by the BLM and the Forest Service, call 618-2354 or 800-267-3126. The recording is updated by 9 a.m. each day when burning occurs.
