Saturday night, the Crusaders dropped Riddle 57-7 at Spiegelberg Stadium with five touchdown passes. "We are spreading the ball around real well and establishing a great passing game," first-year coach Robert Metcalf said. "Austin (Anderson) is really coming into his own at quarterback and our backup, Chris Sutton is duking it out with him. It’s a good problem to have." The two quarterbacks combined to complete 7 of 12 passes for 150 yards, leading St. Mary’s (3-1, 1-1 Southern Cascade League) past a shell-shocked Irish team. Kris Lovinsky caught three touchdown passes, two from Anderson and one from Sutton, and finished with 83 yards. Ryan Greene and Robert Leonis also hauled in scores. Greene also returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown. The Crusaders jumped out to an early 22-0 lead, and continued to put points on the board, thanks in part to seven Riddle fumbles. Advertisement "I challenged them to come out and play the game with their own expectations and play as a team," Metcalf said. "I wanted them to give a workman-like mentality and get after it, regardless of the score." Senior running back Keith Butts gained 117 all-purpose yards and led all players with 94 rushing yards. The team captain made his presence felt all over the field. "Keith was phenomenal," Metcalf said. "Defensively he was all over the field and in on a lot of the tackles and he gained yards on the ground, through the air and on special teams. It was a big night for him." St. Mary’s travels to face undefeated Lost River in Merrill next Saturday. The Black Tornado dropped a 25-23, 25-20, decision to Jesuit. In the quarterfinal match against the Crusaders, Jessica Durham had six kills and Allanah Munson had 23 assists and two aces, while Kelsey Hamilton led the defense with 15 digs. Top-ranked West Linn won the tournament with a 25-17, 25-15 victory over Central Catholic. SANTIAM CHRISTIAN TOURNAMENT — At Adair Village, top-ranked Cascade Christian went 4-2 in pool play, but lost in the championship match. The Challengers lost to Portland Christian, 25-10, 17-25, 15-6. Cascade Christian cruised to a 25-14, 25-10, victory over Union in the first round, then defeated Gervais, 25-20, 23-25, 15-13, to advance to the finals. St. Mary’s lost its opening-round match in bracket play, 25-18, 25-10, to Monroe. Skyline A Volleyball PROSPECT 14-25-25-25, GILCHRIST 25-22-12-20 — At Prospect, the Cougars assumed control of the Skyline A League in a battle of undefeated teams. Senior outside hitter Candice Bennett owned the net with 18 kills, 11 digs, one ace and one block. Nicole Newcomb served nine aces to go along with seven digs and five kills and Lacy Musard added seven digs and four kills. Halfway through league play, Prospect is 10-0 overall and 5-0 in the Skyline A.
