Winners have one year to stake their claims, but no one has stepped up to pocket the prize won in a Powerball drawing Feb. 18, 2006, Oregon Lottery officials said. If no one comes forward by 5 p.m. Feb. 19, the prize money will be turned over to the state along with lottery profits to fund education, economic development and parks and natural resources. The Ashland winner bought a ticket at one of the town's 19 lottery retailers, but officials don't know which one, said Ray Martin, an Oregon Lottery spokesman who works with winners. The seller, who also gets a prize bonus, can't be identified until the winning ticket is presented, he explained. The player hit five of the winning numbers, missing only the red Powerball. The five-number match was worth $200,000, but the Ashland player bought a multiplier option for an additional dollar and boosted the prize to $800,000. The size of the main jackpot that week created a bonus pool that added another $467,142 to the prize, for a total of $1,267,142. Advertisement Oddly enough, the Ashland ticket isn't the only unclaimed prize in the Feb. 18, 2006, drawing. A ticket sold in Tigard also hit five numbers for a $667,142 win. "We've had unclaimed prizes over the years, even Megabucks jackpots, but it is pretty unusual to have two in the same drawing," Martin said. The winning numbers that week were 15, 17, 43, 44 and 48 with the Powerball 29. Two other winners who matched five numbers — one in Redmond and one in Chemult — claimed their prizes within a week of the drawing, Martin said. From the Oregon Lottery's inception in 1985 through July 2005, $69.5 million in prizes have gone unclaimed, spokeswoman Marlene Meissner told the Mail Tribune in 2005. Oregon Administrative Rules require "Any prize not claimed within the specified period for a lottery game is forfeited and credited to the public purpose" (education, economic development and natural resources programs that the Lottery funds as part of its regular operation).
