A Medford man is in critical condition after suffering severe burns Monday afternoon when rust-removal chemicals he was heating on his kitchen stove flashed, authorities said. James Hickey, 74, suffered burns on his upper extremities and was the only one injured in the 1 p.m. fire at his house on the 3600 block of Camina Way in Medford, according to the Medford Police Department. Hickey restores motorbikes in his garage and apparently was heating the rust-removal chemicals when the fire occurred, sending a blast of thick smoke out of his house, Medford police Sgt. Steve Furst said. A neighbor who is a retired firefighter saw the smoke and pulled him out, Furst said. Hickey was taken by an ambulance to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, where he was listed Monday afternoon in critical condition, said Lauren Van Sickle, Asante’s senior public relations specialist. Hickey was scheduled to be airlifted Monday to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, Van Sickle said.
