Greg Walden, R-Hood River, announces funding for the Medford airport, Savage Rapids Dam and other activities in Southern Oregon From wire and staff reports More than $6 million will be poured into local projects as a result of a spending bill approved by Congress on Saturday. The legislation, also known as the omnibus bill, includes fiscal year 2005 funding provisions for everything from the Medford airport to Savage Rapids Dam on the Rogue River. The funding was announced Monday by U.S. Rep. Greg Walden, R-Hood River, who worked with U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Gordon Smith, R-Ore., to obtain support for many of the projects. The request includes $1.2 million to replace the terminal at the Medford airport. The terminal does not meet security specifications as outlined by the Federal Aviation Administration or Transportation Security Administration. The funds will be used to ensure the airport meets safety regulations. Advertisement The bill also includes a $2.2 million allocation to begin construction of irrigation pumps at Savage Rapids Dam on the river’s Jackson-Josephine county line. The pumps are slated to eventually replace the dam owned and operated by the Grants Pass Irrigation District. Other projects in the bill include: The Safe Walk Route Project in Medford will receive $500,000 to invest in the construction of sidewalks and improvements to sidewalks, curbs, gutters and storm drains. Projects will be focused in areas of a one-mile radius around about 10 elementary schools in Medford. The money will be in addition to a $4.6 million bond measure Medford voters approved in November for sidewalk construction around elementary schools. The Medford Senior Center will receive $25,000 to enhance its advocacy program, which combines a meal site with an information and referral service. Last year, more than 27,000 meals were served to local seniors in the largest privately operated meal program in Jackson and Josephine counties. The program includes legal aid and assistance with food stamps, prescription drugs, insurance, housing and transportation. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service forensics laboratory in Ashland will receive $2.7 million. The funds will be used as part of an expansion project.
