Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell Arrests follow shooting at Medford apartment By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune An estranged husband and wife were jailed Wednesday on attempted murder charges after one of them shot at a fleeing man outside a Spring Street apartment complex. Medford-residents Anthony Michael Carnett, 59, and Lori Dee Carnett, 45, were arrested following the shooting. Police do not yet know which one fired at a 20-year-old Medford man, who fled the scene and contacted police from a nearby business, Medford police Lt. Tim George said. The victim allegedly showed up at Lori Dee Carnett’s apartment while Anthony Michael Carnett was visiting. At some point, one of the them fired a handgun at the man through the open door of apartment No. 19, George said. Multiple rounds flashed through the door, slamming into a nearby apartment. Police spent the afternoon hunting for the stray bullets that tore through the bedroom walls of apartment No. 6. "Luckily, no one was home that afternoon," George said. Advertisement Police responded to the 911 call at around 2:20 p.m. and set up a perimeter that blocked off Spring Street. They prepared to contacted the shooter, but soon learned Anthony Carnett had left the scene and returned to his home at the 600 block of Royal Avenue. Police arrested him there less than an hour after the shooting. A handgun was recovered at Carnett’s home. "Right now we’re alleging that (Anthony) Carnett was the shooter, but that could change" George said. Because the investigation remained in the early stages Wednesday, police are not sure what prompted the shooting. George said he is not sure of the nature of the suspects’ relationship with the victim. He did say that Lori Carnett knew the victim. George said it is unknown if either of the Carnetts were under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the shooting. Officials from the Oregon State Police crime lab scoured the scene, searching for stray bullets. "This is a pretty concentrated group of apartments," George said. "Any time you fire a gun around there you take a chance of hitting someone." George said the Julia Ann apartments have seen an increase in crime in recent months. "That complex has been coming up on our radar screen lately," George said. "There are a lot of good tenets there that deserve better." The complex was the scene of an officer-involved shooting last May. An officer shot and wounded an armed man after a violent struggle inside apartment No. 30. The Carnetts were lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of attempted murder and first-degree attempted assault. They remained jailed late Wednesday in lieu of more than $1 million bail.
