Incumbent Julie Niles-Fry seeks to retain her seat in a challenge against former board member Harry Davis. Newcomer Richard Pardy, a budget committee member for the district, is running unopposed for the seat of incumbent Mike Kuntz, who is not seeking re-election. Incumbent Vince Ceriello, appointed in December, also is unopposed. In the race between Niles-Fry and Davis, both candidates expressed a desire to ensure the district is frugal with limited resources. After three years on the board, Niles-Fry said, she is eager to continue the work she had begun for District 35. Niles-Fry, 45, a sales rep for Ganz, maker of Webkinz, said she hoped to see the board continue to use the district's strategic plan as a guide, regardless of decreased funding from the state. "We as the community have put in what we feel is important in our schools, so now we go to the budget committee and basically decide yes or no on programs based on the amount of money we have and the priorities of the district and the community," said Niles-Fry. "We need to ensure we get the best for our money and that we make sure our students are prepared for the 21st century regardless of what happens with state funding." Davis, 74, who served on the school board from 1997 to 2005, said he enjoyed his time on the board — before being defeated for re-election in 2005 — and wants to serve again. The biggest issue, he said, "is going to be how to take care of the funding problems, keep the teachers happy and just do the best we can." Davis said his years of experience on the board would be a plus. "The new superintendent is doing a good job and I just want to help out," Davis said. "If I win, I'm hitting the ground running and there will be nobody on the board with more seniority than me." Both Pardy and Ceriello voiced a desire to improve available technology for students and do what they can with limited resources. Ballots are due by 8 p.m. on May 19. Drop boxes will be available at Rogue River City Hall, 133 Broadway St., and the county election offices in Medford, 1101 W. Main St. Buffy Pollock is a freelance writer living in Medford.
