Daily Memo THE NATION Wal-Mart pulls wrestling doll after protests ATLANTA -- A doll depicting a wrestler carrying a female mannequin's head was removed from Wal-Mart stores Tuesday after complaints that it makes light of violence against women. John Bisio, a company spokesman, said complaints from Sabrena Parton, assistant professor of communications at Kennesaw State University near Atlanta, and from the manager of a Cartersville Wal-Mart prompted the decision to pull Summer Slam '99: Road Rage Al Snow. The toy is modeled after Al Snow, a World Wrestling Federation competitor who carries a female mannequin's head into the ring. The wrestling doll carried a female doll's head with "Help Me" written across its forehead. "My sons are 6 and 11. What kind of message would this toy send them?" Parton asked. Barnes & Noble buys piece of iUniverse.com NEW YORK -- Barnes & Noble Inc. is buying a 49 percent stake in iUniverse.com Inc., a Web-based publisher that helps aspiring authors get their books printed and sold. The companies declined to disclose the terms of Tuesday's deal, which is Barnes & Noble's biggest push into the publishing business yet. The New York-based company does own a small publishing house and also publishes books under its own imprint. Barnes & Noble says the deal will help it discover fresh and new writing talent that some of the giant publishers might overlook. RECALL Allergy fears prompt Tyson to recall fajitas WASHINGTON -- Concerned that people with dairy allergies might be harmed by its chicken fajitas, Tyson Foods Inc. is recalling 129,000 pounds of the product distributed nationwide. The poultry firm discovered that some of its fajitas contain the milk product whey, a known allergen, but the packaging does not list the ingredient, the Agriculture Department said Monday. The recalled products are Tyson's "Restaurant Favorites Chicken Breast Fajitas" and Kirkwood's "Chicken Fajita Kit" in 26.6-ounce packages. Both products have "Est. P13137" on the end of their labels. The Tyson product date numbers begin with 265, 267, 268 and 270. On the Kirkwood product, the numbers begin 273, 279 and 280. No illnesses have been reported. The USDA advises anyone concerned about an illness or allergic reaction to contact a doctor immediately. Consumers should return the products to the store where they bought them.
