I also grow cannabis for myself and a few friends, one of whom is blind and one of whom is a Vietnam veteran. If Jackson County adopts the new regulations they are considering, I will no longer be able to provide free cannabis for my friends and they will be forced to buy their medicine. I am also concerned about the slippery slope of the county regulating what we can and cannot do on our own private property. I do understand the concerns related to cannabis grows. However, what is the difference between a cannabis garden and a horse ranch, or a dirt bike track or a vineyard? Our neighbor piles horse feces 25 feet from our home. Between the smell and the never-ending hordes of flies, it is difficult to enjoy our property. Another neighbor rides his dirt bike at full speed 10 feet from our property line. Another neighbor has a vineyard he sprays 3 days a week with a very large, loud machine. Is the county going to pass laws requiring setbacks for horses, or that they be kept inside? What about dirt bikes? What about vineyards? L. Neil Buettner Talent Greedy and selfish Regarding the MT and Associated Press coverage of the domestic terrorists in eastern Oregon. If one prefers a kinder term, let me suggest "goobers," a simple, amusing fool. Harper¹s Magazine provided a great history of Cliven Bundy and this "movement" in the February 2015 issue "Ruin of the West" with "The Great Republican Land Heist / Cliven Bundy and the politicians who are plundering the West." Harper¹s covers how they are supported by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), fighting federal ownership of public lands and helping states to pass stand-your-ground laws, privatize public education and implement Ag-gag rules. These people don¹t want to play by the rules. They don¹t want to pay the incredibly low fees for grazing on public land while their cattle destroy public land, owned by all Americans. They are greedy and selfish, and as Ed Abbey would call them, "welfare parasites." They get away with their belligerence because they are white and Christian. If they were Muslim, Black, or Native American, they would be dead. Their message is nonsensical, continually citing Christ and the Constitution, ignoring the fact that public land, law enforcement and government fees are legal and Christian. Enough is enough! Derek Volkart Talent Rights of the individual Upon reading Julia Sommer's letter (12/23), I was amused and thought she was poking fun at the real "elites," those who have ideas superseding those of the free citizens and are expressed and implemented by the force of government. Then I realized she was serious and was urging us to join and support a whole slew of liberal programs that will further solidify the power of a highly centralized government and result in an increasing loss of individual rights. Many of us look at the federal government and see expensive, gross, even destructive, incompetence. We are told unvetted, skill-less Muslim immigrants are good for the country although they will be welfare recipients for years. Government controlled health care was instituted by relying on the stupidity of the (Democratic) voter, and is now so beastly expensive that few can afford it without money confiscated from the productive and redistributed. The president assures us controlling the climate by higher taxation and restricting economic growth will halt radical Islamic terrorism. No, thanks! I'll take the rights of the individual and experiential knowledge to the rule of a man with a "phone and a pen" and a penchant for failed programs.
