The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has recommended that china, copper and quillback rockfish be dropped from the seven-fish marine aggregate daily limit after federal stock assessments found them to be in relatively low levels. Also, the agency is recommending that blue rockfish join cabezon as species for which only one can be kept as part of that daily seven-fish aggregate after similar assessments showed low numbers. But the proposal also contains a first for Oregonians since 2003. They will be able to keep one canary rockfish as part of that limit. The proposed changes are scheduled to be voted on today by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission when it meets in Salem. The four species in question make up only about 5 percent of the total recreational catch among anglers targeting black rockfish and lingcod — by far Oregon's most often-caught bottomfish, according to the ODFW. Most of these fish are caught in shallow waters while jigging, so their survival rates upon release should be high, an agency assessment concludes. Blue rockfish are often misidentified as black rockfish, so having the one fish-limit in the daily aggregate will provide some legal wiggle room for anglers who end up unknowingly keeping one. If adopted, the changes to the blue, china, copper and quillback rockfish restrictions could become effective as early as next week, according to the ODFW. The canary rockfish change would not become effective until that provision is published in the Federal Registry, likely in March, the agency reports. Fly-tying classes offered for beginners, experienced tyers The Southern Oregon Fly Tyers are offering two new classes this winter for beginner and soon-to-be classic fly tyers. The introduction to fly tying's basic tools will introduce beginners to the art of tying your own flies; the class is set for three Saturdays — Feb. 7, Feb. 14 and April 21. The classes will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Fly-tying tools are are available for loaners, and the only cost is $35 for tying materials. The class is taught by tyers Dave Roberts and Dan Kellogg, and is limited to a dozen participants. To register, telephone 541-601-5658. Roberts and Kellogg also plan to teach a three Saturday clinics on the art of tying classic Irish salmon flies for experienced tyers looking to explore this genre of flies. The classes are planned from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 28, April 4 and April 18. The materials cost for these classes is $45. This class also is limited to a dozen tyers. To register, telephone 541-200-4063. All the classes will be taught at the Fly Tyers Den on Hammel Road near Eagle Point. Participants should bring their own lunches and beverages.
