Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend July 30, 2005 Since We Asked: Californians — here they come, there they go ... How is it Californians and other out-of-state people can come here, buy a house and rent it out and go right back to where they came from? My understanding is you have to live in the house for two years before you can rent it out and live in it for five years before selling it. How can they get away with this? Also, how is it that they can come and live here and not have their driver’s licenses changed? I’ve had several people tell me they don’t want to take the motor vehicle test or don’t want to pay the fees and they’ve lived here for over six months. How can they get away with this? This isn’t fair to the Oregonians who abide by the laws and pay their fees. — N. Richardson, Medford Advertisement We feel your pain, Mr. Richardson. In fact, one Since You Asked staff member lives on a street where a Californian bought four houses. He’s rented out three of them, but can’t seem to fill the fourth. There is nothing illegal about buying a house here and doing pretty much anything you want with it. After all, this is America. In recent years, folks have been investing in Rogue Valley real estate as an alternative to the stock market. There also are plenty of tax advantages to investing in homes. Take heart: All this buying and selling is churning out profits and boosting the American economy (not to mention the Rogue Valley economy). As to your acquaintances getting away with living here without an Oregon license: Unless they skedaddle back from whence they came, they will pay the piper at some point. It’s just a matter of enforcement. Once you have become a resident of Oregon, you are required to obtain Oregon vehicle title and registration and to obtain an Oregon driver license or instruction permit. You can be ticketed for each if you don’t. Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
