Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News June 4, 1915 SCALDED TO DEATH TAKING A BATH ASHLAND, June 4 — Henry Thompson died here yesterday as a result of being scalded while taking a treatment for rheumatism at the Helman baths about a week ago. No blame attaches to the employees of the establishment. Inasmuch as Mr. Thompson was waiting upon himself as was his habit, he apparently not needing an attendant. It is thought he was overcome to the extent of not being able to make an outcry. When discovered, scalding water was running over his prostrate body in the bathtub. He was removed to the hospital where his injuries were found to be serious, if not dangerous from the start. The deceased was a former resident of Cannon Falls, Minn., and came here some time ago. he was a retired capitalist, having real estate investments hereabouts. He was about 65 years of age and a widower. ANOTHER SPRAYING WILL BE NECESSARY Recent examination of orchards which were sprayed with arsenate of lead before or during the rainy period of the past few weeks shows the fruit surfaces to be almost or quite free from the poison. The cool, damp, weather has also retarded the activity and development of the codling moth, so that the greatest damage from "worms" may be expected in the next few weeks. To prevent this injury, another arsenate of lead spray at the rate of four pounds to 100 gallons should be applied as soon as possible. Scab has also been unusually active during the damp weather, and there is still sufficient moisture on the fruit surfaces during the night to induce spore germination. Infested orchards should therefore be sprayed again with lime-sulphur at the rate of 2½ gallons of the stock solution to 100 gallons of water, or with atomic sulphur at the rate of 12 pounds to 100 gallons of water. It is well to use the same materials as was applied in the last scab spray. These materials may be combined with the arsenate sprays. Great care should be exercised to prevent drenching the trees, since burning is more likely to result from such practice, especially when lime=sulphur and lead arsenate are used in combination. Also avoid spraying when the day is intensely hot. M.P.
