Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 10, 2005 Kendall Gielow (40) of South Medford operates under the basket against Bend Friday in nonconference boys basketball. Gielow, a senior wing, scored two of his team-high 18 points on this sequence. Mail Tribune / Andrew Mariman South breezes by Bend Second-ranked Panthers share the wealth in romping to their second win of season By KRIS HENRY Mail Tribune Facing a South Medford lineup that boasts four starters who stand at least 6-foot-7, Bend coach Don Hayes knew his team was in for quite a challenge when they stepped on the floor Friday night. With only one starter reaching the 6-5 mark, Hayes devised a plan to slow down the second-ranked Panthers’ boys basketball team. It didn’t work. "We wanted to jam the key to make sure they shot outside, and they did," said Hayes. "They just made them all. There’s not much you can do about that." In truth, South Medford didn’t make all its shots on Friday, it just seemed that way. The Panthers connected on six of their first seven shots to open a 15-0 lead and were never threatened in a 76-38 rout of Bend in the South High gymnasium. Advertisement "To our credit, the kids came out and played well," said South Medford coach Dennis Murphy, whose team led 25-5 after one quarter of play. "In the first quarter we had 10 baskets and nine assists. I think that really tells you a lot about the basketball team and the buy-in to this point that these kids have had in regards to sharing the ball because all these guys can score." Senior Kendall Gielow paced South Medford (2-0) with 18 points, including 10 of the Panthers’ first 15, and sophomore point guard Michael Harthun added 17 points in the runaway victory. Junior Dylan Anderson made the most of liberal minutes for the Panther reserves by adding all 10 of his points in the second half. "I was just open more than other people were and was able to knock down my shots," Gielow said of being South’s high-point man. "We have equal talent on this whole team. It could’ve been anybody’s night, it just happened to be mine tonight." Friday was the kind of night that coaches dream about, with team-leader Kyle Singler more interested in sharing the wealth and keeping up South’s communication level on the defensive end of the court. The 6-8 junior totaled only seven points, but added four rebounds, four assists, three steals and one blocked shot. "That’s going to be the key more than anything, being unselfish and sharing the ball," Singler said of South’s potential for success. "We did it well tonight and it showed out on the floor and on the scoreboard." Given the chance to pad his stats with a rim-rattling dunk after being found all alone on a breakaway, Singler instead opted to drop the ball off for a charging Gielow, who capped the play with a tomahawk slam over Bend’s Jeff Stoefen. "The thing about Kyle," said Murphy, "Kyle is not about scoring a lot of points. Kyle’s just about playing the game, playing it hard and playing it well, and that’s what he did. There’s no question in my mind he gets just as much pleasure off a pass as he does a basket." That’s not to say Harthun and Singler weren’t working for a little showtime throughout the contest as the Panthers led 40-13 at halftime and limited the Lava Bears to 8-for-32 (25 percent) shooting through three quarters. The duo hooked up for several successful lobs against South Eugene in a season-opening, 77-45 victory last Friday. On Friday, however, the magic just wasn’t quite there until Harthun finally lobbed the ball off the glass for a two-handed jam by Singler early in the fourth quarter. "The timing just wasn’t there but you’re going to have that some games," Singler said of the alley-oops. "That was probably the first game that’s ever happened. We’re just going to move on and we’ll get that timing back." It was that type of night for the Panthers, who also received six points and seven rebounds from Brent Johnson, eight points from Myles Daley and seven points off the bench from Tony DeSimone. "It’s always fun getting out in the open court and getting layups and fastbreak points and dunks and stuff," said Gielow. "Mike does a good job of pushing the ball up to make that happen." Stoefen paced Bend with 15 points, the brunt coming against South’s reserves in the fourth quarter. Point guard Kent Ervin added 12 for the Lava Bears (1-3), who scored almost half their points (17) in the final stanza. Friday’s bit of home-cookin’ will have to tide Panther fans over for quite a while, with South playing its next nine games on the road before returning home for a Jan. 13 encounter against Grants Pass. In that span, the Panthers will play in the Red Bluff Holiday Classic and the Les Schwab Invitational in Hillsboro. "You go play in these tournaments because you want to play as good competition as you can find," said Murphy, "and we’re going to find out a lot about ourselves."
