The performance will be the second concert in CMC's 67th season that began Oct. 12 with Andy Stein's Blue Four. The American Brass Quintet's program, "Five Centuries of Brass," will highlight brass repertoire written from the Renaissance through 2006. The American Brass Quintet gave its first public performance on Dec. 11, 1960. At that time, brass chamber music was still relatively unknown to concert audiences. Since then, ABQ has performed in Europe, Central and South America, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and all 50 of the United States. They have a discography of more than 50 recordings and have premiered more than 100 new brass works. During its 2005-06 season, the ABQ produced volume two of its recordings of the Civil War brass music of the 26th North Carolina Regimental Band. The CD is scheduled to be released this fall. The group also released a new compact disc called "In Gabrieli's Day," the music of 16th-century Venice. As part of their 45th anniversary celebration this past May, the ABQ premiered Joan Tower's "Copperwave." The Juilliard School commissioned the piece for the ABQ. In addition, the ensemble presented "The State of the Art," a brass chamber music forum that brought together players from nearly a dozen professional brass quintets in a discussion of the past, present, and future of the brass chamber music field. Newsweek called ABQ "the high priests of brass." The New York Times described the group as "positively breathtaking" the American Record Guide wrote "of all the brass quintets, the most distinguished." As part of its mini-residency with Chamber Music Concerts, the ABQ will present two free educational programs that are open to the public. At 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, there will be a performance/lecture by the ABQ. At 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, there will be a master class for Southern Oregon University brass students and the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon brass section. Both events will take place at the SOU Music Recital Hall, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. There are still tickets available for the remaining CMC performances this season.
