Santos takes over as Ashland girls basketball coach By KEVIN GOFF ASHLAND - Stephanie Santos likes having her summers off. When her teaching duties at Ashland High conclude at the end of the school year, Santos, a paleontologist, usually spends her summers digging up dinosaur bones. Santos will have to trade in her shovel for a whistle, however, after being named Ashland High's new girls varsity basketball coach last Thursday. Santos replaces the departed Heather Roberts, who took a coaching position at Lakeridge High in Lake Oswego after compiling a 77-50 record and five state-playoff berths over five seasons. Santos served as Ashland's junior varsity coach for three years and was an assistant to Roberts for one year before taking last year off. "I was very impressed with her ability and potential coaching abilities when we hired her," said Ashland High principal Julie Reynolds. "She's worked with Heather and knows the program and has great rapport with the students." Santos, who is also the girls golf coach at Ashland, will serve as the interim coach for one year. "She was a little hesitant at first because she likes her summers," said Reynolds. "I think this is a perfect time to try this. I think she'll keep the program going with as much continuity as possible. "It (the hire) just seemed like a no-brainer." The Grizzlies went 16-11 last season and finished third in the Southern Oregon Conference - the worst conference showing in three years - before advancing to the state tournament.
