Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 1, 2005 Two-county pursuit ends in car-theft suspect’s arrest Chase started in Rogue River, led to Grants Pass, ended in a skid By SANNE SPECHT Mail Tribune ROGUE RIVER — Jackson County sheriff’s deputies used their vehicles to force a fleeing driver off a busy highway and end a 20-minute multi-agency pursuit that circled through two counties Wednesday morning. Aaron Matthew Delicino, 30, of Grants Pass was arrested and lodged in the Jackson County Jail on a charge of attempting to elude police and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, among other charges. Sheriff Mike Winters said one of his deputies first noticed Delicino on foot on East Evans Creek Road near Rogue River High School. Later, at about 9:45 a.m., the deputy attempted to a stop a black pickup truck Delicino was driving that had a broken taillight. Delicino instead fled toward Grants Pass on Foothill Boulevard. Josephine County Undersheriff Brian Anderson said his deputies assisted Jackson County in the chase. Deputies attempted to stop the pickup truck, which they believe was stolen, at the E Street interchange, Anderson said. But Delicino was able to elude capture by driving across a median and making it to a freeway on-ramp, he said. Rogue River Police Chief Ken Lewis said his scanner "lit up" with calls from officers as the pursuit headed southbound on Interstate 5 — and back toward Rogue River. Advertisement Delicino left the freeway at Rogue River, headed across the Depot Street Bridge and continued his flight back toward Grants Pass on Highway 99. It was on the highway just past the bridge that deputies were able to end the chase. Nudged by a sheriff’s car, the pickup lost traction and skidded about 30 feet, coming to a stop just in front of a power pole. Winters said the chase reached speeds of up to 65 mph. Use of the "pit maneuver" caused damage to one of Jackson County’s patrol vehicles, he said. But it was necessary to end a dangerous situation, he said. "All chases are dangerous," said Winters. "But they are more dangerous the longer they go on." Three Josephine County units, two Jackson County units and one Rogue River unit were on scene at Delicino’s capture just after 10 a.m. "(Delicino) was compliant," said Anderson. "We didn’t have any more trouble from him once we got him stopped. But he sure didn’t want to stop." Jackson and Josephine county criminal records show Delicino has multiple convictions for driving while suspended and driving while revoked and arrests for theft and burglary.
