No. 3 Henley rolls to 48-7 win over Pirates KLAMATH FALLS -- Phoenix reverted to the past by opening the game with its legendary spin-T offense, but No. 3-ranked Henley overcame an early deficit and thumped the visiting Pirates 48-7 in Skyline Conference football Friday. The Pirates took an initial 7-0 first-quarter lead when Christian Heath connected with Cody Rombach for a 39-yard touchdown on a pitch-back pass off a dive play. It was all Henley from then on. "The spin-T gave us some problems early," Henley first-year coach Steve Rooklidge said, "but we adjusted and did better as the game progressed." Greg Conover led the Henley potent ground attack, that piled up 351 yards, with three touchdowns and a game-high 205 yards. "We're a running team," said Rooklidge. "Conover has been pretty successful all year. He had some huge plays tonight. They stacked eight men in the box the whole game, so we went outside for most of our yards." The Hornets added 114 yards through the air on nine completions. Phoenix was limited to 21 yards rushing on 33 carries. The Pirates had more success through the air with 125 yards. "We did a good job of getting a pass rush on them," said Rooklidge. "We sacked them a number of times, probably in double figures." Henley's defensive pressure was spearheaded by tackles Eric Wietlisbach and Mike Perpish. HIDDEN VALLEY 44, ROGUE RIVER 16 -- At Rogue River, Hidden Valley junior running back Nick Mason scored two touchdowns and rushed for 209 yards as the Mustangs struggled with underdog Rogue River. The Chieftains pulled to within an 18-16 deficit when Ricky Shamblin hauled in a 75-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jarrod Garwood with 6:46 remaining in the third quarter. But the Mustangs responded with 26 unanswered points as senior flanker Ryan Wilson came alive. Wilson scored on a 53-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Rob Adler just 20 seconds after the Chiefs cut the Mustangs' margin to two points. Adler was forced into action because Hidden Valley starter Matt Kennedy was held out of the game for precautionary reasons because of a concussion suffered in the next to the last play against Mazama the previous week. After Mason dashed 55 yards for a touchdown with 8:38 left in the fourth quarter, Wilson completed the scoring with touchdowns of 14 and 37 yards on his only two runs of the game. Hidden Valley rushed for 276 yards and Adler was 5-of-8 for 113 yards passing. Rogue River totalled 323 yards in offense. The Chieftain attack was balanced, with 166 coming on five completions and 157 on the ground. Jesse Smith led the Chieftains with 73 yards on 19 rushes. North Valley threatened twice in the fourth but came up empty. Freshman quarterback Tim Cunha completed 8-of-17 passes for 96 yards with one interception for North Valley. He's the fifth quarterback this season for the injury-riddled Knights. The Knights had a 45-yard touchdown pass called back when Derek Wright was ruled to have stepped out of bounds. North Valley drove inside the 10 on that possession before a penalty helped stall the drive. The Knights also lost two fumbles. MAZAMA 41, LAKEVIEW 16 -- At Klamath Falls, quarterback Tyler Starkey rushed 34 yards for one score and passed 4 yards for another as Mazama neared its second straight trip to the Class 3A state playoffs. The Vikings (7-1, 5-1 Skyline) totaled 308 yards rushing and Starkey added 28 through the air as Mazama dominated the contest. Robert Draper led Mazama's rushing attack with 96 yards on seven carries, while Duke Wynne scored on runs of 11 and 16 yards. Mazama outgained Lakeview 390-239 in total offense. Chad Longacre rushed 24 times for 104 yards and scored on a seven-yard run for the Honkers (0-8, 0-6).
